Tasmanian School Canteen Handbook

The Tasmanian School Canteen Handbook was first prepared in 1994 by the School Canteen Advisory Committee in response to consistent requests for assistance in the areas of canteen management, employment of personnel and appropriate foods for sale in the school canteen. The handbook was updated and revised in 1999 and has recently been reviewed during 2005 and 2006 to provide schools with the most current information regarding the operation of school canteens.

The contents of this handbook also support a number of recent initiatives in the education and health sectors, locally and nationally, that are directed at improving the health and wellbeing of young people. These include:

  • Tasmanian Food and Nutrition Policy 2004
  • Active Healthy Schools brochure 2006
  • Move Well Eat Well for schools project
  • Additional funding to support CoolCAP canteen accreditation
  • Tasmania Together
  • Australian Better Health Initiative
  • The Tasmanian Curriculum, Health and wellbeing syllabus

Looking After Our Kids

Are you confused about the food safety standards
Don’t worry – Be happy!

The National School Canteen Food Safety Project video and handbook are here to help you!

“Looking After Our Kids” shows how to comply with the national food safety standards.
The video and handbook were developed by FOCiS (Federation of Canteens in Schools), with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.
The video and handbook are designed to help school canteen manager, volunteers, school principals and parent bodies understand their responsibilities under the legislation.

Written by school canteens, the materials show how to meet the standards in a practical, commonsense way.

A free copy of “Looking After Our Kids” was sent to all schools in July 2002.

“Looking After Our Kids” is available from your Local Council.

The recipes have been provided by canteen managers and meet the same healthy food guidelines and nutrient criteria which is used by FOCiS and Tasmania Cool CAP in our registered products programs.

The recipes are particularly useful for canteens as they cater for 10, 25 and 50 serving sizes.
